Damien Jurado - White Water- Monday, March 14

Picture
Genre: Down Tempo/Folk/Minimalist/Other
From: Seattle, WA

Perhaps one of the biggest names White Water has pulled in months, Damien Jurado (pictured) makes a special and intimate appearance at White Water.  There isn't a whole lot of standard biography press out there, so I took the two sentences from his website which make me think this man is slightly crazy, but also really awesome.

"Damien Jurado, recording artist for secretly canadian records. Enjoys making albums with Richard Swift, playing nintendo with his son, and long walks on the beach".  - Saintbartlett

Viva Voce, from Portland, Oregon, is one of the openers this evening.
The other opener for the evening is local Little Rock gem, who just released the spectacular album More Like A Temple, Adam Faucett.

There's going to be more talent on this stage than I can handle, and I'm thoroughly looking forward to seeing this lineup that will surely being one of the best the first half of this year.

Tickets to this show may be purchased here.

The Body - Downtown Music Hall - Monday, March 14

Picture
Genre: Classic Rock/Metal/Really Loud
From: Providence, RI via Little Rock, AR

One of the last times The Body played in Little Rock, they blew out the speakers two songs in to their set at Juanita's.  That goes to show just how loud two dudes can be.  Needless to say, they put on one excellent show, and have been making it habit to re-visit Little Rock more often than not these days.  They've got a die hard fan base, and it should be really interesting to see them play at a venue as small as Downtown Music Hall.  Effortlessly switching for haunting lyrics, to metal screams, this should be an excellent show to catch if you've never seen them.  Also, don't forget your earplugs!  You'll thank me in the morning.

Wild Flag/Times New Viking/Yellow Fever - Stickyz - Monday, March 14

Picture
Genre: Pop/Psychedelic/Rock/Lo-Fi/Indie
From: Portland,OR/Columbus, OH/Austin,TX

This is one of the most stacked bills I've seen in a minute. The one thing I hate about SXSW time is that there are good shows every night all over town so one must pick and choose carefully.  I often can't decided until the last minute, but this show is most definitely in the running for this Monday night.

"What is the sound of an avalanche taking out a dolphin? What do get when you cross a hamburger with a hot dog? The answer is: WILD FLAG."

"WILD FLAG is a Portland, OR and Washington DC based quartet consisting of Carrie Brownstein, Mary Timony, Rebecca Cole, and Janet Weiss. The members of WILD FLAG have played in numerous and notable bands, including but not limited to: Helium, The Minders, Croissant Cocktail, Feeble Knees, Quasi, Dogz, Sleater-Kinney, @@@, The Consortium, Asia, and Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks".  -WF Myspace

This band sounds like it will be a lot of fun to see.  Unfortunately, their Myspace doesn't offer any tunes to preview them, which is odd, but hey, it's not my page.

Times New Viking (pictured) is pretty great.  I saw them during their inaugural performance in Little Rock at White Water Tavern several months ago.  They're definitely on the Lo-Fi side of things, and they put on a great set.  I'd love to see them again, hype aside, I think they're worth a second chance.

Yellow Fever is unknown to me, but I figure if they are touring with these other two bands, they must be fairly good. They remind me vaguely of Belle & Sebastian without the accents and a bit of Of Montreal without the flamboyancy of Kevin Barnes.   I also hear some Bishop Allen thrown in without the overly sugar sweet melodies.  Needless to say, they seem like a thoroughly interesting, but great choice to share this bill.

Either way, this should be one of those great Monday night gems that don't happen all that often.

Ryan Bingham & The Dead Horses - Rev Room - Tuesday, March 15

Picture
Genre: Americana/Rock/Roots Music
From: Los Angeles, CA

"Having a preternaturally weathered voice whose grain splits the difference between Springsteen, Stephen Stills, and Steve Earle never hurts, and neither does having a rambling, roaring band; but it was “Crazy Heart’’ — the movie that won Jeff Bridges his first Oscar — that likely changed Bingham’s fortunes forever. Namely, he now may have one.

Co-writing (with T Bone Burnett) “The Weary Kind (Theme From Crazy Heart),’’ which won both an Oscar and Golden Globe as best original song, the soundtrack has catapulted the 29-year-old singer to the front of the wrangler cowpoke pack."
-Jonathan Perry for Boston.com

I've heard absolutely nothing but good things about Bingham (pictured).  He puts on one hell of a show, and as the quote up there seems to suggest, he's going places.  He's played in town before to small crowds, but I anticipate this one to either sell out or be very near one.  It's not often that you get to see someone so talented in such a small (in the grand scheme of things) venue.

Liam Gerner, from the UK, is slated as the opener.  He shows quite a bit of promise, and I believe he'll be a great opener for Bingham.

Cheap Girls- White Water - Tuesday, March 15

Picture
Genre: Powerpop/Rock/Indie/Other
From: Lansing, MI

Cheap Girls (pictured) is just coming off a tour with Against Me! and Fences, and I could not be more thrilled to see them again at White Water Tavern.  They played Little Rock at the end of Jan. beginning of Feb. with Against Me! and it was a rollicking good time.  I haven't seen a band in quite some time that both intertwines great lyrics with the sheer energy of the music to combine for one kick ass set.

ABSOLUTEPUNK says [Cheap Girls] is “a breath of fresh air and a welcome listen to those who loved the raw and sloppy tendencies of 90’s indie and alternative.”   I think that sums them up pretty well, and I'd welcome them back to our humble little town any day of the week.

Seasoned, kick you in the face, rockers, Two Cow Garage out of Columbus, Ohio share the bill.  Grab yourself a pitcher of beer, join in on the singalong songs, and most of all make some good friends this evening while listening to great music.

Laura Stevenson rounds out the bill.  She sounds uniquely Laura Stevenson with twinges of Samantha Crain and Dana Falconberry thrown in for good measure.  I do believe Ms. Stevenson will definitely be able to hold her own with all the guys on the bill this evening.

(Also word is these three acts are also playing Hot Springs at the Valley Of The Vapors on the afternoon of 3/20)

Drag The River/Austin Lucas - White Water - Wednesday, March 16

Picture
Genre: Americana/Indie/Folk/Other
From: Ft. Collins, CO/Bloomington, IN

I'll be perfectly candid here and say that these are two of my favorite touring acts these days.  In recent years, I've become a huge Drag The River fan, and within the last year, Austin Lucas has literally knocked me off my feet with his voice and lyrics.

This evening sees Jon Snodgrass & Chad Price (pictured) making their way back to the tavern's cozy stage, and it brings Lucas back since the last time he was in town and recorded the next installment of the Live At White Water Tavern series on Last Chance Records.  These guys all have a great history together, and I expect it to show through their stories, music, and their behavior through the night.  If myself and others in Little Rock could, we'd stow them away and keep them here for a lot longer.

Expect a lot of drinking, dancing, and beautiful music with heartfelt lyrics. Also, I do believe it's the night Austin's live album drops.  Come out and have a great evening, and just chat it up with these guys because they're all beyond nice and always have something funny to say.

American Aquarium - Stickyz - Sat., March 26

Picture
Genre: Alt-Rock/Country/Americana
From:  Raleigh, NC

It's absolutely no secret that I'm a big fan of American Aquarium.  I've been a fan since I first saw them about three years ago.  I'm excited to see the boys come back through Stickyz.  The last time they played in Little Rock, they played there and everyone there united in rapturous revelry to sing their songs about women, whiskey, and heartbreak.  At one point, we were all arm and arm singing along at the top of our lungs, and it was one of the best show experiences I've had in the past year.

BJ Barham knows how to write the quintessential whiskey-fueled song about love won and lost.  The audience can feel his heartbreak through the words he's penned, and that's a victory for any songwriter out there.  He's backed by some of the finest musicians Raleigh has to offer.

You can expect dancing, singing, and copious amounts of drinking at this show.  Dust off those pretty spring dresses and your best cowboy boots, and come out and dance to what will hopefully be another one of those nights that you won't soon forget.

Mandy McBryde and The Unholy Ghost get the evening started off right.
